Winston Rodney, OD (better
known as Burning Spear) is a
Jamaican and a living legend
soul reggae singer and
musician. He was born in Saint
Ann's Bay, Saint Ann, Jamaica
in March 1, 1948. The great
influence in his life was Bob
Marley and Marcus Garvey. In
1969, he met Bob Marley at the
latter's farm and told him
that he wanted to enter the
music business. Bob Marley
told him to start at Dodd's
Studio One label. Larry
Marshall (Reggae singer ) who
was approached by Rodney who
gave him advice and arranged
the introduction. They were
joined by tenor Delroy Hinds.
The trio recorded numerous
singles for Dodd and two
albums before they work with
Jack Ruby in 1975. They
worked with Ruby on their
third album and Marcus Garvey
which was become successful
and led to a deal with Island
Records to give the album more
releases. Rodney build his own
Spear label for other releases
where he would have full
control eventhough some
releases followed on Island
which include a dub album
(Garvey's Ghost) and the "Man
in the Hills" album. In 1976,
he split from both Ruby and
group members (Willington and
Hinds), in that point on used
the name Burning Spear for him
only. In 1977, Dry and Heavy
was the next album
(self-produced but still on
Island). He performed in
London in the same year with
members of Aswad which act as
his back up band for a
sold-out show at the Rainbow
Theatre (which was recorded
and released as Live!) Aswad
also become his back up in his
next studio album "Social
Living" in 1978 which featured
Rico Rodriguez and Sly Dunbar.
