Don Van Vliet (born with the name Don Glen Vliet) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and artist. He is popularly known by his nickname Captain Beefheart. Popular for his impressive singing voice with its high notes. Captain Beefheart also played several wind instruments such as harmonica, saxophone. His music is combined with rock, blues and psychedelia with free jazz, avant-garde and current experimental songs. He is also known for practising about dictatorial authority over his backing musicians.
In his minor years, he formed a friendship with Frank Zappa which he later teamed up with. In 1964, he start performing with his stage name Captain Beefheart and enter the original "Magic Band" that was formed in 1965 by Alexis Snouffer . The band catch attention with their cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" (it become a hit). In 1967, they released their debut album which entitled "Safe As Milk" on Buddah Records. After loosen by two previous record labels, they signed to Straight Records which owned by Frank Zappa. Being his producer, he allowed Captain Beefheart his artistic freedom in making his third album with his Magic band which entitled "Trout Mask Replica", it is released in June 1969. The Rolling Stone magazine is ranked the album in the fifty eighth place in their 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
