Scientist (born with the name
of Hopeton Brown) also known
as Overton Brown, is one of
the pioneer of dub music. He
is an apprentice of King
Tubby. He was born in
Kingston, Jamaica in 1960. His
name came from a joke between
King Tubby and Bunny Lee. The
observe Brown's technical
ambitions and advanced
thinking ideas, Tubby
mentioned "Damn, this little
boy must be a scientist."
Brown's knowledge in
electronics was taught by his
father who is working as a
television and radio repair
technician.He start building
his own amplifiers and will
brought transformers from
Tubby's Dromilly Road studio.
While working there, he keep
on asking King Tubby to give
him a break in mixing. He was
brought on at Tubby's as an
assistant which he perform
tasks such as winding
transformer coils and start
working as a mixer in the
mid-1970s. At first creating
dubs of reworked Studio One
rhythms for Don Mais' Roots
Tradition label. He was given
a chance when Prince Jammy cut
short a mixing session for
Mais because he is very tired
to go on. "Collie Weed" is
first hit record that he mixed
was Barrington Levy's. In the
late 1970s, he left King
Tubby's studio and became the
chief engineer for Channel One
Studio when he was hired by
the Hoo Kim brothers. He was
given a chance to work on a
16-track mixing desk instead
of the four tracks at Tubby's.
