While Green Day and The
Offspring are considered
top-notch in the genre of punk
rock in this day and age,
almost every band (both before
and after them) to grace the
stage since then have found
their influence (and musical
direction) in several punk
rock acts from the 70s.
Bands such as The Clash, The
Ramones and the catalyst of
the punk rock movement itself,
The Sex Pistols are still
revered for their
revolutionary style of music
combined with a scandalous
lifestyle that kept them in
the news (and in trouble) for
a long time to come.
Since the Sex Pistols have
always been considered at the
helm of this movement, any
doubts as to the contenders to
the Gods of punk rock
‘throne’ has been crushed
beyond recognition, thanks to
their breakthrough single in
1976 titled “Anarchy in the
UK” that was followed by the
chart-topping ‘God Save the
Queen” single that was
released in the following
year.
And while this single was not
the first punk single that was
released ever, it was plain to
all, that this was the
beginning of new generation of
music with The Sex Pistols
pushing experimentation to the
limits in every department of
making music, while being a
fabulously tight band when it
came to playing live.
And even until this day it is
difficult to imagine that The
Sex Pistols (not unless you've
heard their music), while only
lasting for two and a half
years as a band, broke all
boundaries in so short a time,
thanks to their
anti-establishment lyrics,
tight instrumentation and
bad-boy lifestyles... and most
remarkably remaining an
inspiration for upcoming bands
for so long now...
